There was much debate in advance as to who would open for whom. After all, can you imagine the indignity of having to play second fiddle to Coolio? Perhaps that fate is nearly as bad as being second to Mr. Loc (which was the order the proceedings went down on Friday). Regardless, both put on quite the fine show (I had totally forgotten that Coolio did Fantastic Voyage), and there was smell of pot was so thick that I was beginning to think even the horses were smoking up.

Doing the Wild Thing
Laura and I spent our Friday night Pete Rose style, at the racetrack. We headed over to Hollywood Park to play the ponies. I hit it big in the 6th race, when a 15-1 long shot placed, but more importantly than that, we went to see the last of the free summer concerts Hollywood Park puts on after the races, featuring Coolio and Tone-Loc.

Its always been kind of baffling to me that Coolio didn't have more staying power. It Takes a Thief was a solid debut and Gangsta's Paradise had a couple of decent singles in addition to the title track. I always thought he had a good presence and flow, and I don't see why he couldn't have continued to churn out perfectly acceptable pop-dance-rap tracks for years.
It's not as inexplicable as Naughty By Nature falling off the face of the Earth, but it always struck me as odd.
