My Rock & Roll Lifestyle

I had front row tickets to Guns n' Roses through work on Tuesday. To give you an idea of how good the seats were, Taylor Hawkins, the drummer from the Foo Fighters, was sitting a couple rows behind me. I have to say, Axl looked better than I thought he would, and if it weren't for the dreds, he'd almost look like himself circa 1993. Went with my boss, and one of our artists, William Tell. You may recognize his track Slipping Under from current American Idol promotions.

Sebastian Bach opened, and unfortunately he's the only one I have a picture of, since venue security at the Gibson Amphitheater was yelling at everyone who pulled out a phone during the GnR set. His version of 18 and Life was one of the most exciting songs I think I've ever heard from an opening act. Also had backstage passes, which was a first. It's not like there was much to see backstage, except a bunch of other people with backstage passes. There was free booze, which was nice.

Axl certainly isn't doing this thing on the cheap. The band featured three guitarists, two keyboardists, a bassist and drummer. It was noted that one of the keyboardists was likely just handling some of the programed backing vocals. In a truly old-school rock move, each guitarist took a 5 minute-plus guitar solo, as did one of the keyboardists. Given that none of them were named Slash, it was more than a little excessive. It was worth sitting through for the classics.

Speaking of old-school rock moves, as early as the Sebastian Bach set, multiple girls in the open area in front of the stage took their tops off, popping out their girls repeatedly throughout both his and GnR's set. Sebastian seemed right at home with it, though surprisingly Axl looked a little weirded out, and never really mentioned it. For those wondering, I would estimate the girls in question were about 8 years old when Appetite for Destruction came out.

In other celebrity news, I saw Danny Strong, who played Jonathan on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, at the Bed Bath and Beyond in Santa Monica today. Something must have paid pretty well, because he was driving a really nice BMW, which would seem beyond the means of a small part on a WB show. However, that IMDb profile is accurate about the 5'2" part, he was really short.

Damn I'm Old

Well . . .

After nearly a week and a half of being 30 years old, I have to say its not so bad. Granted, I've had plenty of time to get used to having gray hair already. But I'm rather pleased with the increasing number of people who now call me "sir" (as in "sir, I'm afraid we have to ask you to leave"). I know someday I'll have to switch to saltines and metamucil instead of saltines and gatorade to keep my strength up, but for now being 30 doesn't seem much different from being 29.

In other news, I spoke with Bradley Boyle. He is, in fact, still alive (or at least as alive as one can be in Toledo, OH). Other than that, not much seems to be new with him.

Apparently there is no Calendar section of the New York Bar

Reed, November 14th was 3 weeks and one day ago. That's when you last posted (or commented). However I approve of your bachelor party idea and look forward to the results.

Calling out Mr. Carey

Reed - more than a month wait for a response to an email is too damn long. We need a batchelor party this spring whether you choose to be involved or not.

Hoyas - Perhaps I've just appropriately lowered my expectations, but even when we were up in the first half I didn't realistically think this team was gonna take down Duke at their place. Even the eggregiously bad calls didn't phase me much, since I figured it was all part of the plan. Hopefully the team can use a big win over Oral Roberts as a rallying point this year. I for one and quite looking forward to the matchup where Roy goes against an 800 foot Jesus.

Eddy - Our first official visitor from the east (even if he only came from the central time zone). Methinks you have been in the educational environment too long if you're still frequenting the underage bars of SLU. Stay away from my younger sister.

Brad - Does anyone remember laughter?

Schisa - if your new york football jets take the last playoff spot away from the bengals by going undefeated against the easiest schedule in football over the next month I am going to start calling for a BCS system in the NFL. Clearly they would be Boise St. That and the whole NFC would be division 1-AA.

Alan - admit it, your alterego on hoyasaxa is venom.

Patrick - which losing presidential candidate are you going to work for this time around?

Y. Lupu - Why not?

The Sky is Falling!

Three games into the season, I have to say that if the Hoyas don't figure out how to attack a zone, it's going to be a long and disappointing year.

I have faith that we will get better -- we absolutely shredded SU's zone at times last year, so it's just a matter of getting the current personnel to play at that level. But it might be bumpy getting there.

This team suffers a lot for not having a swing player in the mold of bowman or owens. Green is an exceptionally skilled 4, but not to the point where he can fill that role. Egerson is a good defender and rebounder, but not polished enough offensively. I think Summers has the best chance of filling that role by the end of the season, but he's not there yet.

I do like our chances against Duke, since coach K is arrogant enough to stick with the typical Duke overpursuing man to man even though our offense will feast on it, but we need to figure something out before big east play or we will be in a lot of trouble.

Stuff

Bill -- sorry I missed you while you were in town. I was in a complete fog by the end of october after a hellish month of work, completely forgot that you were coming that weekend and didn't see your blog post until today. Hopefully I didn't pull a reed and ignore a phone call or voicemail from you, but if I did, my apologies.

Everyone -- I've once again got two season tickets for the hoyas, so if anyone wants to come down (or east, for most of you) for a game, you've got a seat. Also, I'm pretty sure that I'm going to do the Big East tournament this year, if people are interested in that.

Reed, does the C&F affidavit just apply to you, or does it also cover Buck?

1000 Pizzas is great, but where are my other 1.5 chickens!

Despite being a little disturbing that there is a website titled "meatnews.com", this story is just too good not to post.

I passed the bar!

Well:

Unlike various Kennedys, I have managed to pass the New York bar exam. I have to admit that I'm rather relieved. Emily passed too, so now we both need to start the paperwork to actually get admitted to the bar. Schisa, would you be willing to fill out and sign a character and fitness affadavit?

Other than the bar, things are going well. Work isn't bad - long hours, but reasonably interesting stuff. I'm in the tax law practice group right now, but I'm going to be doing a rotation in corporate in a couple of months to try out structured finance and financial institutions, as well as giving securities law another shot. The real world is good so far.

Oh, and I need your addresses for "save the date" cards.

Dies est cecida

Like Ceasar crossing the Rubicon, I too will be making a triumphant return to the nation's capital this evening/tomorrow morning.

I'm fairly certain Will is the only person left there, but in case I'm wrong I thought I'd post my plans here. Said plans call for an early morning 5k, followed by lunch somewhere in DC, followed by drinks at this place. Ken claims it is the place to be, I just figure it matches up nicely with Laura, who is on a project in Nashville for the next 8 weeks. If you'd like to join for lunch, I think it will be either Tombs, Cheesesteak, Pollo Rico, or Red Hot and Blue. As Ken noted, the Tombs is quite the shitshow on homecoming weekend, so Cheesesteak is probably gonna be the winner. Give me a call if you'd like to meet up for either activity.

Could Homecoming Get Any More Lame?

When Chicken Fingers get promoted as a legitimate homecoming event I know I'm not dying to head back to the hilltop. On the other hand, at least they're not serving them on a Friday in Lent (tho they're probably still doing that too).

Other items that are sure to have the alumni returning in droves:

- Homecoming Tailgate: "Due to limited space, cars will not be allowed in McDonough parking lot and no outside beverages will be permitted. The tailgate will be held rain or shine. Please remember to bring photo identification to the event."

So let me get this straight. It's a tailgate, but no actual automobile tailgates will be involved? Also, alums have the pleasure of overpaying Georgetown for drinks, and there won't be any undergrads in the joint to sketchily scope out? Seems like Champs would be a really appealing alternative (if it were still in existence).

- Homecoming Game: I never went when the thing was free. What about charging $8 to see the Hoyas and Red Foxes square off makes it more appealing? Can't somebody just donate enough money to get their name on the MSF so they don't have to pay it off $8 at a time. Since the link I found to a Voice article on the topic was broken, I can only speculate as to how long it would take at that rate, but even if that is going to the next $20 million they were asking for as of last year, we can expect the football contributions to cover it sometime in 2262. Interestingly enough when researching this I noted a fellow classmate has dropped at least $25k on the project already. If any of you know Mr. Michael Romaszka, B'99, I'd give him a call and offer him the Brooklyn Bridge, or perhaps some swampland in Florida.

All that said, is anybody heading back?

HS Football

I'm sure Eddy didn't attend a public school, and probably instead went to Little Lord Fauntleroy’s School for Privileged Youth, or some such place. Regardless, he may have enough community pride to throw some money behind Lakeland FL High when they take on my St. Xavier Bombers a week from Saturday in the 'nati. Lakeland finished last year as USA Today's #1 team (X finished 5th), and both teams will likely enter the game with a national ranking (currently 3 and 13). So what say you Eddy, willing to bet a cheese steak on your boys?

Maryland, My Maryland

Maryland may have stayed loyal to the union, but apparently the author of its state song must have been a Confederate sympathizer.

I especially like the reference to "Northern Scum"

Stupid Question

What do you all pay for cable? Adelphia just got bought out by Time Warner in SoCal, and I really hate Time Warner. I hate paying them $128/month even more (includes internet, HBO, Showtime). Is this just what cable costs and I should suck it up, or am I getting ripped off and should switch to DirecTV.

Crapulent Want Ads

Although I hesitate to try and follow up Will's post, I guess I have no choice...

Don't know if any of you know a recent college graduate with decent knowledge of statistics/excel that would like to move to LA, but if you do, I need an employee.

Done!

Sorry I've been silent during all of these embiggening and cromulent posts - but as of yesterday I'm done with the New York bar exam. It sucked a lot. But its over now and hopefully I won't have to take it again, ever.

I don't have any crapulent comments at the moment, but hopefully I will soon.

Yes, this is work

Although I haven't heard anything on it to rival Talkin' Seattle Grunge Rock Blues or as we referred to it in the 4 Angry Listners days, Roots Grunge, I feel obliged to post the ecard to Todd Snider's latest. Yes, it's on the label I work for, and yes I'm sure there are people being paid to post this to blogs. I however am not one of them (and in all likelihood they are interns, so therefore unpaid), I only deal with numbers. Regardless, enjoy all the same.

How hard is it to get a lawyer to return your call

Multiple calls to Will and Reed went unreturned this weekend, which has me wondering whether I did something to piss both of them off. I had no idea it was so difficult to get free legal advice.

Regardless, a few things for you all to think about:

- Laura (who lurks on this blog regularly), asked me today, "What does that word (embiggen) mean? I looked it up at dictionary.com, but it wasn't listed?" I explained it was a perfectly cromulent word.

- In other Laura news, her counselor at Deloitte suggested she give the lead partner of the west coast practice a call, just to re-introduce herself. I suggested she have him over, head to the swimming pool in back and tell him she had some serious plans for the firm, and hoped to be moving up in a big way, but only if he was on her team.

- I'm due to be in Vegas August 8-11, and am considering staying for the weekend since Laura is likely out of town in China. Any one else interested?

- Eddy's power must still be out because I can't imagine he wouldn't have at least commented on Will's post. Eddy, you're still the prettiest Asian transvestite we know, don't ignore us. We promise not to talk about the shorts.

- Georgetown is once again scheduling some real heavyweights. Will, I'll bet you're glad you paid top dollar for Towson and Winston Salem St.

Thursday, July 20, 2006

Thank you Bill, for that Cromulent Post

Rather than commenting on Bill's post, I thought that a new post might encourage some others to end their silence and further embiggen the blog. Reed, for example, should have plenty of time to post random crap while he studies for the bar exam. And once Eddy's power comes back on, I feel like he must have something to share on the subject of asian transvestite prostitutes.

Thailand does indeed look quite nice. Sadly, I have not had a chance for a real vacation this summer. I can post some pictures of my office, though, if people want to see what I've been up to.

A huge post to enbiggen the soul of the blog

This blog has been dead for too long. Nothing like vacation snaps to liven things up.

Laura and I just got back from a little post graduation trip to Thailand. We spent 3 nights in Bangkok and a week in Phuket. Thailand is awesome, and I highly recommend you check it out if you have the chance. BKK is a really cool city -- like New York but hotter and with more Transvestites (asian men that look almost as pretty as Eddy). Highlights included this place called Bed Supperclub, where the meals were served in bed. Sadly we were not there for models night, but let the record state that I did not kick Laura out of bed for eating, although no crackers were served. Also, if you need a custom suit/shirt/tux made, I highly recommend the Rajawongse brothers. As you can see by some of their clientele below, they do some pretty good work, and have been featured in the New York and LA Times. You can send them measurements and get dress shirts custom made for only $25 (plus shipping).

Phuket was slightly more relaxing although there were still plenty of tranies. We stayed at the J.W. Marriott, which was fab (especially the breakfast buffet that included ice cream amongst other things). Interestingly enough we met some girl at the marriott bar from DC, who works for a company building highrises in Ballston. I accused her of killing carpool, but since she didn't know what it was, the conversation was rather onesided. Besides picking fights, getting fatter and drinking at the swim up bar, we also got out to see a few things. The following two snaps are from our kayaking trip around the islands of Phang Na bay (a couple James Bond movies have been filmed there).

Although not as exciting as the cave kayaking, we also sailed out to Phi Phi island (where they filmed the movie "The Beach"). Unfortunately the waves were too rough to go ashore, so this is as close as we got.

Last Day Off

My two year sabbatical called business school officially ends on Wednesday, as I've accepted a job to work for Universal Music Enterprises in Santa Monica. The official title is Director of Sales Analysis, and while I'll likely be able to better explain exactly what that means a few months from now, it's basically doing number crunching for their sales data that's never been done before. They're paying me like I'm going to solve all the industry's problems, so hopefully that is the case.

RIP

For the former Ballston crowd, they're tearing down Carpool to make way for yet more condominiums. It wasn't the greatest bar in the world, but for the bar that you'd go to because it was close, I always felt that it fulfilled its role admirably.

Nice...

After one good season following on nearly a decade of mediocrity, Georgetown has doubled the required donation levels for season tickets (at least for my season tickets). I'll probably suck it up and pay because I can afford it and I like my seats, but this doesn't seem like the best way to build goodwill.

How can you compare some creepy scientology "cone of silence" to this? It's a classic. Nothing against the miracle of..... well, actually on second thought the childbirth thing could be kind of cool. Hmm, I take it back.

Fun Run Donations

I'm participating in UCLA Challenge for Charity's first annual Fun Run Fundraiser this weekend, and was wondering if you all could help me out. For the event the school is attempting to raise $5k. While I hate raising money for running events, my section is very behind, so I'm just looking for a few bucks to get us going (a $5 or $10 donation would be great). Here are the details on the charity and how to donate:
UCLA Challenge for Charity (C4C) is the largest charitable organization at the Anderson School of Management at UCLA. Last year, UCLA C4C raised over $86,500 and volunteered over 4,100 hours for two charities: LA Works and Special Olympics of Southern California. All activites throughout the year are dedicated to raising money and providing volunteers to these two organizations.

Since 1991, LA Works has partnered with hundreds of other non-profit social service agencies throughout Los Angeles to improve the quality of life in the Los Angeles community. Their mission is to increase volunteer participation, provide community service organizations with access to volunteers and educate people about the social issues affecting the Los Angeles community.
Special Olympics of Southern California (SOSC) is an international program of year-round sports training and athletic competition for more than one million children and adults with intellectual disabilities and closely associated developmental disabilities. SOSC serves over 11,000 children and adults, ranging in age from eight to eighty.

To donate: Please click on the following link to make a donation today: http://www.andersonc4c.org/funevents/index.cgi
** Please be sure to write in “Section E” in the donation comment box area.

UCLA Challenge for Charity has a 501(c)3 (non-profit) corporate standing, so any contribution you make is tax-deductible.

"Few people know that I'm fueled creatively by my massive hatred of immigrants..."

Actually, I'm fairly agnostic on this whole immigration debate, but I was rather annoyed that I had to wait 20 minutes last night for a metro car that wasn't packed to the gills with protesters from the big march in DC yesterday.

In any event, my sour mood reminded me of this, one of my all-time favorite SNL sketches.

One of the Dumber Things I've Done Lately

Was turning down a ticket to see the GMU/UConn game today, since I had to get some work done and thought the Huskies would win by 15.

Between this and Villanova crapping the bed against Florida today, DJ's shot not going down Friday night is becoming more and more disappointing. That's basketball I guess.

Goin Dancing

At the risk of jinxing us, I like our matchup with Northern Iowa. Saw them against Bucknell and was not impressed. We'll have a significant size and athleticism advantage. I'm definitely happy to be playing them rather than a team like NC State or Arkansas.

Ohio State doesn't exactly strike fear into me, but they'd be a tough matchup. Our perimeter defense has not been so hot lately, and they've got some good shooters. Would rather have had tennessee as the 2 seed, but what can you do.

Not sure that Cuse deserved a 5 seed even after their BET run. Texas A&M will be a tough out, judging from the way they played Texas lately. LSU also seems like a tough matchup for the Orange.

March Madness

Some random observations on basketball.

This year's SU team is the most frustrating yet exhilirating team that I have ever rooted for. It amazes me that they've managed to pull things together for an amazing three game run after an entirely lackluster season. I'm generally not a big fan of scrappy white guys like mcnamara, but he has to be the best clutch player in Syracuse history.

Eric Devendorf looks like a date rapist.

Georgetown sorely needs some more depth, and someone to emerge as the go-to-guy. Sounds like the depth might be on the way, but Green (if he stays) really needs to elevate his game next year to address the second point. Also the defense seems to have regressed since midseason. Not sure if it is fatigue or other teams figuring out better ways to attack us, but it needs to be a point of emphasis going forward.

Still, how nice will it be to watch the selection show tomorrow to see where Georgetown is going and not whether they're in?

This is the most wide open NCAA tournament I can remember, mostly because the top teams all have enough question marks that it's hard to picture any of them putting together a six game run against elite competition.

We're a movin' on down...

...to the west side, to a nice apartment on the first floor of a brown stone. I'm not sure if this means we get a piece of pie or not.

Emily and I are moving in together - its a really nice place on 51st Street in Hell's Kitchen. Its an outstanding location for commuting and a cool neighborhood. And we have a deck. So, next time you're in New York, drop by.

I also feel that it may be time to pass the Dave Boyd Dollar on to a new custodian. I have proudly displayed the dollar for my tenure, but now I feel that the Dollar should go to someone else. Obviously, it can't go to Brad, because he'll just spend it on cigarettes. So whoever else is interested, let me know.

F'N Hoyas...

Well, I guess you can't expect to beat a top 15 team scoring less than 20 points in the second half. We were due for a bad shooting game, and we sure as hell got it.

Would have been nice to have the win, as now looks like we need to win 2 of 3 among Marquette, Villanova, and Cuse to secure a bye in the BET, and that will be a tall order.

Oh, and I saw on the hoyasaxa board that it's Alan's birthday -- hope you drowned your sorrows with some split personalities...

Now if only they can get Mike Hunt as their coach

I posted on my HS blog about a month ago how I thought it was funny that the Stetson University athletic teams go by the moniker "Hatters". They've got nothing on Wichita State.
